The raccoon stopped the car.
"Well, why not?" he said.
"I’ll let you drive for a while."
"Oh, thank you, sir!" said Toad.
Toad jumped into the driver’s seat.
"Now turn the key," said the raccoon.
"Vroom!" went the engine.
Toad pretended he didn’t know what to do.
"Put your foot on the gas pedal," said the raccoon.
"Now press it slowly."
The car started down the road.
"She did it!" said the chipmunk.
"Imagine!" said the squirrel.
"A washwoman is driving a car!"
Toad went a little faster.
Then he drove faster still.
"Be careful, washwoman!" yelled the squirrel.
The raccoon tried to take the wheel.
Toad pushed him away.
Toad sped up as fast as the car would go!
"I am no washwoman!" shouted Toad.
"I am Toad! I steal cars!
I break out of prison! I am fearless!"
The squirrel and the chipmunk screamed.
"Grab him!" cried the raccoon.
The chipmunk pulled at Toad’s bonnet.
"He stole our car!" shouted the squirrel.
The raccoon tried to grab the wheel.
"Get your hands off!" shouted Toad.
They fought over the wheel.
And the car sped crazily down the road.
