L3-01 The Duck Race
●Cover
Today we are gonna read this book, it’s called Oxford Reading Tree, The Duck Race. Hey,
isn’t this the level three? Yes, congratulations, now this is a whole new level. So all the stories are
going to be longer and a little bit more difficult. Are you ready? Yes! Let’s get started. The Duck
Race. Quack, quack, quack. Are there going to be alive ducks? Let’s take a look at all the ducks.
Do you think they are looking like a little bit wired? They are paper ducks. Paper ducks like the
paper boats? And what are they doing there? They are all standing on the footbridge. Everyone is
looking at them. A duck race, so don’t tell me they are gonna let these ducks race. I am curious,
let’s find out.
●Page 1
It’s a boring afternoon. Everyone is staying here. What shall we do? I don’t know. And then,
Wilma said I know what to do, we can make paper ducks. Wilma had an idea, bing, had an idea.
That’s a wonderful idea because that’s a really interesting handcraft, OK? So what do we need? If
we are going to make some paper ducks. What do we need? Ta-da! Color paper, and crayons,
maybe markers, we have scissors, and rulers, tape, glue, everything. OK, so what is Wilma doing?
Wilma is folding the paper. Fold, OK?
●Page 2
And then, wow, look, everyone is busy doing the handcraft. Look, you can use the scissors to
cut, cut, cut, cut. And you can cut out any shapes that you like probably. Look, they have cut out
some ducks, duck shaped paper. And you need to glue, to glue them together. Glue! And look at
Wilma is trying to glue this top part onto the paper boat. So the children made six ducks, one, two,
three, four, and more are coming. OK? Let’s have a duck race! Said Wilma. Do you want to play
the duck race? Yes, I do. I want to play this.
●Page 3
So all the children go outside. And there is a stream. And over the stream, you see a footbridge.
OK, everyone walk onto it. Mum began the race. OK! Three, two, one! Drop the ducks in. Said
mum! Let go of the duck boats. OK! Let go! Hey! Look at Kipper, I think Kipper is very smart
because he is lowering the duck. Look, in this way, probably, you will land better. Let’s see! Go,
go, go!
●Page 4
The ducks went down the stream. Oh, no! Wilma’s duck sank. Which one is Wilma’s duck? I
don’t see it! Oh, there! Er oh! Sink! You know, the paper duck is very likely to sink because it is
made of paper. When paper is wet, it’s gonna sink. OK? What else can sink? Astone, if you have a
big stone, and you throw it in the stream, it will just sink. But some other things will not sink. For
example, a boat, a boat will float on top. Can you float or sink? I can float! Wow, so that means
you are a good swimmer. OK, and all the people are cheering, hey, go, go, go! Oh, look, what is he
doing? He is waving his arm, go, go, go! You are not going to push your duck boat forward, right?
Of course not, he is just trying.
●Page 5
OK, and then Chip’s duck got stuck in the reeds. Susan, what are reeds? Well, reeds are very
tall grass that you see usually in shallow water. And you know what? We can use reeds to make
baskets or mats. So they are very useful. OK? Er, oh! Something happened. Chip’s duck got stuck
in the reeds. Er, oh! So this duck boat can not keep going. You are right! Stuck! OK! Probably I
think there is a rule, you can’t touch it once it starts going. So Chip says, oh, no, I am going to lose.
OK! So Biff’s duck got stuck in the weeds. Susan, what are the weeds? Well, weeds are the grass
that you don’t want in your garden. Like, if you have a garden there, you have beautiful roses, and
then more weeds are coming. That’s not good because they will prevent the roses from growing
better. So you need to weed your garden. Let’s say it together, weed my garden. Good! So you
need to get rid of the weeds. Go, go, go, go, go! I only want my roses.OK? Oh, no, Biff’s duck got
stuck again. Then, er oh, they can’t win. Sorry, you two!
●Page 6
Oh, look! Oh, no! What happened here? Wilf’s duck got stuck on a log. Susan, what’s a log?
This is the log. When you have a fallen tree, this is the log. OK? You can use the logs to make
beds, or maybe other things like chairs, tables. They can be quite useful. But look, Wilf’s duck is
stuck there. And then what's he doing? He is saying, hey, hold this, hey, this may help you. So he
is trying to hand the stick to Wilf. So probably they can use the stick to get it unstuck. But isn’t
this against the rule? You are not supposed to touch it, right? Get it off with a stick, said Chip. And
then Biff said, no, no, you can’t do it.
●Page 7
OK!And look at Kipper. Kipper is so happy. Why? I see, Kipper’s duck went fast. It went past
daddy’s duck. Oh, I know, so this one is daddy’s duck. OK? And this one is Kipper’s. So Kipper’s
duck is No.1 now. So Kipper is so happy. Hooray! My duck is in the lead. OK! And then what do
you think daddy is thinking? Daddy is thinking no, no, no, go, go, go, my duck! OK! Let’s see
who is gonna win?
●Page 8
Wow, what are those birds? Those birds are called swans. Look, the swan almost knocked
daddy off his feet. This big swan flew by dad. OK, so do you like swans? I love swans. They are
big birds with very long necks. So elegant and so beautiful. You can see them usually on the lake.
And when you see them, don’t forget to feed them. Do you know what they like to eat? Wheat
bread! Yes, swans like to eat wheat bread. Now two swans flew down. And they landed on the
ducks. Splish, splash! What will happen to the paper ducks? Er oh! They are gonna get wet. They
are gonna sink. Oh, no! So probably there will be no winner, right?
●Page 9
Six soggy ducks, said Kipper. Soggy means wet, completely wet. Yes! Oh, no! So probably
there is no winner. I think the swan is the winner. The swan says, ducks, go, go, go, I am the
winner. OK! Now do you wanna try and have a duck race? I do! But I have a question, it’s made
of paper, so that means when it is wet, it is gonna sink. Why don’t you change something to make
it? I don’t know. Maybe because it is easy.
●ReadAgain
So now let’s read it, are you ready?
Very good! Now monkey, why don’t we go and make some paper ducks? We can have a duck race!
Can I have more animals? Why not?
