In this book review, I will be discussing the “giants” in Fall of the Giants. There are many explanations,I believe that the “giant” is the old society groups that has been broken throughout the the whole war. Peasants revolting, women are given more power than before, and the power of the dukes has been reduced. This is represented in every aspect of the story. Particular people and their personalities that led to what they chose to do, which in turn influenced the events that has happened in their societies. There are big and small changes, giving people the right to be respected and slowly pushing civilization forward through each and every break through in history.

One extreme example is the Russian citizens marching on streets to demand for bread, then turned in to an rebellion against the tsar. This is caused by the lack of a good living conditions and people’s morals are down to the ground. This lack of care from the Russian government has lead to a disaster for all the people in Russia, even himself, because he has lost his power due to being overthrown by the people. The rules that has been followed for hundreds of years had been broken because people need stuff to eat, this is how the world is changing through the war. People suddenly have different choices of what to do, this is a new thing for them, it requires learning and testing how things work. It also shows the society off Russia is being independent instead of being controlled.

There is also the fact that women has had a great surge of increased power during the war. This is mostly due to the problem that most of the men are sent off to fight in the war, so women are needed to work. When women started working, people are surprised to discover that women can work just as well as men. This fact had driven women to push and to reach for the possibility of a greater power. The power to vote, the power to do whatever they wish to do, instead of having to just blindly obey what men, the “superior” people, tells them to do. The society changed a lot after this, the women started to be able to control their own lives and decide what was the best for themselves.
 
The peasants in Great Britain also has been through a dramatic change, they were now more powerful than the farmers because they have votes. The times have shifted from the time of earls and dukes, now it is the common people that has the power in their hands. As Billy stated, “Gentleman, you are history. Fellow workers, we are the future!” This indicates that the strength of people has boosted and became great, this is peasants’ time now. The peasants now can stand face to face and has the same rights as any earl or duke have. That is a very important point for people, because they have gained freedom through power.

In conclusion, the great war has changed the society of people dramatically. This is no doubt true because of many things that has happened during the war. Women rights have increased and they could work now. Peasants have the right to vote and choose the person they want to put in charge. The society of Russia has been completely changed as the tsar has been overthrown. This is a great step towards modern society, and everything is caused by the need of needing common man to fight wars, women to work when men is not around. This shows that the “giant” in ‘Fall of Giants’ is the old society and its rules.
