這本傳記最大的特點是作者給出大量歷史背景信息，諸如芬蘭、俄羅斯、瑞典的關系，19世紀的巴黎，世界發(fā)展局勢等等，對理解諾貝爾生活軌跡，致富之路都有所幫助，還有些補充信息似乎與諾貝爾個人并無關系，如愛迪生與硝酸甘油部分，只是增加了傳記的篇幅。

通過這本書可以了解歐洲人眼中中國古代的四大發(fā)明之一：火藥是指gunpowder，也稱黑火藥，這個傳記把火藥發(fā)展大致歷程梳理得比較清晰簡潔。
