從蘇美爾人的楔形文字、古埃及的象形文字、腓尼基人的字母、希臘文、拉丁文的發(fā)展一直到印刷術(shù)、打字機、到當今計算機的使用，信息量很大，書末附錄詞匯表和地圖都很有用，算是本不錯的參考書。
可惜該書虎頭蛇尾，因此只能給出三星。前五章除了線性文字內(nèi)容過于粗略外，其他幾種古文字的介紹都比較清晰到位，還有相應的破譯經(jīng)歷，可見作者下了功夫；越往后越有拼湊嫌疑，中國文字沒有安排在古文字部分，而是放在書法之后，有些奇怪，但內(nèi)容尚可，最后兩章就絕對是湊數(shù)了，不如刪去。
