A Christmas Carol is written by Charles Dickens during the Victorian Era. It is about a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge who hates Christmas. The night before Christmas eve he was haunted by the ghosted of Jacob Marley his old business partner which died seven years earlier. Jacob Marley was wearing chains that he forged in life. He then told Scrooge if he kept being parsimony and bitter, he would wear a chain when he dies. He also warned scrooge that he will be haunted by three ghosts when the bell tolls one, and with that the ghost of Scrooge’s business partner disappeared into the darkness. When the bell tolled one Scrooge awoke and saw a small childish ghost in front of him. She was the ghost of Christmas past. She took Scrooge to his childhood where he saw his old school and his old friends. When Scrooge was young, he was often alone. He never went home on Christmas days because of his cold-hearted father. Then the ghost took him to the Fezziwig’s Christmas party where he first met his girlfriend Belle. Later on, the spirt led Scrooge to see he and Bella separated. The ghost left Scrooge alone sitting on his bed. Scrooge aroused when the bell tolled one again. He walked out of his chamber and he saw a luscious feast in front of him and sitting on a chair was the ghost of Christmas present. He had flaming red hair and wore a green robe. He was a jolly old fellow. He took him to Bob Cratchit’s house where he learned that they were very poor and tiny Tim their youngest child was terribly ill. Next the sprit told Scrooge his time was gone and he had to leave, and he left Scrooge. Later on, when the clock stroked the hour Scrooge aroused and saw a black figure floating in front of him. It was the ghost of Christmas yet to come. He led Scrooge to a gravestone and his name was engraved on it. Scrooge begged the spirit to erase the writing on the stone but he didn’t. Scrooge promised that he will restore Christmas. The spirit led him to the Cratchit family who were mourning for Tiny Tim’s death. Scrooge could not resist it any longer so the spirit left Scrooge by himself again. On the next morning Scrooge found out that the ghosts all visited him on one night. It was Christmas and as Scrooge had promised he restored Christmas. He said merry Christmas to everyone he saw and paid Bob Cratchit more. Moreover, he came to have dinner with his nephew. He once was covetous old sinner but now he is a jolly old fellow. This story shows the transition of Ebenezer Scrooge from an old lonely miser to a kind compassionate man and finally achieve his own salvation. “A Christmas Carol “is a novella and it is also a semi-autobiography because is it based on Charles Dickens’s life. This story tells us about injustice to the poor and homeless. Charles Dickens also wanted to enact social change. It is not entirely realist because it includes some supernatural elements.
