大航海時(shí)代的大人物斐迪南·麥哲倫，葡萄牙探險(xiǎn)家、航海家、殖民者，他的環(huán)球旅行計(jì)劃沒(méi)有得到祖國(guó)的認(rèn)可卻贏得了西班牙皇室的支持，于1519年9月20日率領(lǐng)五條船的船隊(duì)出發(fā)，中途又是叛亂、又是沉船，麥哲倫也在1521年4月發(fā)生的一場(chǎng)與土著人的沖突中喪生，他的船員們繼續(xù)航行。1522年9月6日，“維多利亞”號(hào)返抵西班牙，終于完成了歷史上首次環(huán)球航行。當(dāng)“維多利亞”號(hào)船返回圣羅卡時(shí)，船隊(duì)原來(lái)的小300人只剩下18人。
