The unit combines literacy and vocabulary to support learners in acquiring essential Tier 1 vocabulary for the school environment. The unit consists of 12 lessons and four read-aloud books that provide both instruction and practice on thematic Tier 1 vocabulary words. The targeted vocabulary focuses on social and instructional themes including school, the classroom, school supplies, lunch, recess, action words, the body, and feelings. Each lesson focuses on six to nine vocabulary words while providing direct instruction on word meaning and usage, while reinforcing vocabulary for color words, number words, and pronouns.

Emergent bilinguals, who are often referred to as English Language Learners (ELLs) or English Learners (ELs), are students who are continuing to develop their home language while also learning an additional language. The term “emergent bilingual” is intended as a positive description of these students, in that it emphasizes that they’re learning in two languages, and that both the home language and new language are of value.
The Foundational Vocabulary unit is Lalilo’s first step in exploring how to support emergent bilinguals on Lalilo and in their path to develop language and foundational literacy skills.
No! Any student in need of Tier 1 vocabulary instruction and practice can complete the unit. The unit is also a great resource for diverse learners in need of this support. Students with prior classroom exposure to color words and pronouns are ready to begin the unit.
Students who spend 15 minutes of daily practice on Lalilo will complete the unit in two to four weeks, depending on the student’s performance. Following the completion of the unit, teachers will be able to access student performance on the unit from the teacher dashboard under student reporting.
Students will begin the unit as soon as it is assigned. If the unit is assigned before a student has taken Lalilo’s placement test, students will complete the unit first and then take the placement test. If the unit is assigned after a student has already completed the placement test, students will resume their individual literacy progression upon completion of the unit.
The Foundational Vocabulary unit can be added to a student’s pathway on Lalilo from the teacher dashboard on the students’ page. The unit is activated by switching the toggle on for individual students who will benefit from completing the unit.
