Frog and Toad
Frog and Toad 1- Spring
Frogran up the pathto Toad’s house. He knocked on the front door. There was no answer.
“Toad, Toad,”shouted Frog, “wake up. It is spring!”
“Blah,” said avoice from inside the house.
“Toad! Toad!”cried Frog.
“The sun is shining! The snow is melting, Wake up!”
“I am not here,” said the voice.
Frog walked into the house. It was dark.
All theshutters(百葉窗)were closed.
“Toad, where are you?” called Frog.
“Go away,” said the voice from a corner of the room.
Toad was lying in bed. He had pulled all the covers over his head.
Frog pushed Toad out of bed.
He pushed him out of the house and onto thefront porch(前廊).
Toad blinked in the bright sun.
“Help!” said Toad.
“I can not see anything.”
“Don’t be silly,”said Frog.
“What you see is the clear warm light of April. And it means that we canbegin a whole new year together, Toad. Think of it,” said Frog.
“We will skip through the meadows and run through the woods and swim in the river.
In the evenings we will sit right here on this front porch and count the stars.”
“You can count them, Frog,” said Toad.
“I will be too tired. I am going back to bed.”
Toad went back into the house.
He got into the bed andpulled the covers overhis head again.
“But, toad,” cried Frog, “you will miss all the fun!”
“Listen, Frog,”said Toad.
“How long have I been asleep?”
“You have been asleepsinceNovember,” said Frog.
“Well then,” said Toad, “a little more sleep will not hurt me. Come back again and wake me up atabout half pastMay. Good night, Frog.”
“But, Toad,” said Frog,
“I will be lonely until then.”
Toad did not answer. He had fallen asleep.
Frog looked at Toad’scalendar.
The November page was still on top. Frog tore off theNovemberpage.
He tore off the December page.
And the January page, the February page, and the March page.
He came to theAprilpage. Frog tore off the April page too.
Then Frog ran back to Toad’s bed.
“Toad, Toad, wake up. It isMaynow.”
“What?” said Toad.
“Can it be May so soon?”
“Yes,” said Frog.
“Look at yourcalendar.”
Toad looked at thecalendar.
TheMaypage was on top.
“Why, it isMay!” said Toad as he climbed out of bed.
Then he and Frog ran outside to see how the world was looking in the spring.
In the case of most frogs, the right place is under water. We often think that water, in the winter time, is very cold. But as we find out with the ice cube tray in the freezer, water is liquid until it’s frozen. If the water is still liquid, then it is above freezing — but not by much!
Many of Ontario’s frogs, like the Bull Frog, Green Frog, Mink Frog and Pickerel Frog, hibernate in the water. Many think that these frogs would burrow into the muck at the bottom of a pond or river to “keep warm” and stay hidden from predators.
But it turns out that — in order to survive the winter under the ice — they need to stay out of the mud because…these frogs breathe through their skin!
Very cold (4°C) water holds more oxygen than warm water, which is good news for the frogs. They can simply absorb the little bit of oxygen they need directly from the water through their permeable skins.
If they were buried in the mud, the supply of oxygen would quickly get used up, so that is why they stay exposed on the bottom, or perhaps nestled among rocks, logs or roots – to get a constant supply of oxygen from moving water.
Toads commonly found on trails and gardens, like the American Toad, hibernate on land. The forests and fields certainly do freeze, and even the soil freezes, so toads must find a place that escapes the frost.
American Toads must find a place on land to hibernate. To do this, they must dig into the soil, often more than 50 cm, to get below the frost line.
To do this, they dig! Toads have special, hardened knobs on their hind feet that help them dig into the soil. They must dig down, often over 50 cm into the soil, to get below the frost line, where they will spend the winter.
Only once the soil temperature warms in the spring will they know their cue to emerge again.

November 11月
December 12月
January 1月
February 2月
March 3月
April 4月
May 5月
