Trevor Noah, a famous talk show host. Bom a Crime is his autobiography. It is a great memoir, a funny one. It talks about a mother who raise a wonderful child.
Apartheid, the most extreme problem in South Africa, which affected everyone’s life. “The genius of apartheid was convincing people who were the over-whelming majority to turn on each other. Apart hate, is what it was.” Before apartheid, the groups of the black South Africans is not friendly to each other, so the whites came, and made the problem between blacks bigger. The whites taught their children facts, but only facts, nothing on what to think about apartheid. They looked at books, studied them, and forgot them. For a white, apartheid was successful; for the blacks, it was disaster.
The hero in this book and in Trevor’s life is his mom. She helped him “become a man”. She is a religious and stubborn. She would go to churches almost every day, “churches” not “church”. On Sundays, she would even go to 3 different churches, how religious is she!
She is also very “unbreakable”. Other blacks have to live in their places for a whole life, and pay for “black tax”, but she go to the “outside world” to find and learn new things. If others are hit by a gun in their head, they would probably be sad and give up themselves, but she lived on, “happily ever after”. In a community of poverty, violence, and abuse, she can only hope for herself, can’t rely on others. As the second daughter in her family. she didn’t have the dignity of a first born; not the partiality of the last born, only herself, not her parents. Truthfully, Noah’s mom is the real her in this book.
Being a talk show actor, Trevor is funny, but he explains the greatness love a mother can have in these humorous words.
