The Giant's Causeway巨人堤道(也稱巨人之路)是北愛爾蘭著名的旅游景點(diǎn),每年吸引大量游客游覽參觀。
“巨人之路”形成于6-5千萬年前,由于當(dāng)時(shí)的北大西洋板寬脫離歐洲大陸造成激烈的地殼運(yùn)動(dòng),致使海底火山噴發(fā),當(dāng)炎熱的熔巖遇到冰冷的北大西洋海水凝結(jié)再爆裂,形成了如今我們能看到的這種6邊形或多邊形的玄武巖石柱。
在“巨人之路”海岸,4萬多根這種玄武石柱不規(guī)則的排列起來,綿延幾公里,最高處超過海平面12米,氣勢(shì)磅礴,蔚為壯觀,無以倫比的地質(zhì)學(xué)奇觀,1986年聯(lián)合國教科文組織將其列為世界自然遺產(chǎn)。
地質(zhì)學(xué)家研究其中構(gòu)造,發(fā)現(xiàn)這道天然階梯是由活火山不斷噴發(fā),火山熔巖多次溢出結(jié)晶而成。經(jīng)過海浪沖蝕,石柱群在不同高度被截?cái)啵愠尸F(xiàn)出高低參差的石柱林地貌。
在愛爾蘭的傳說中,愛爾蘭巨人在海中用石頭砌了一條通過蘇格蘭的道路去掠奪蘇格蘭巨人,蘇格蘭巨人生氣地沿著道路去報(bào)仇。愛爾蘭巨人把自己打扮成嬰兒的樣
子,蘇格蘭巨人見了以為愛爾蘭巨人連嬰兒都那么大只,于是倉皇逃走,邊走邊拆路,剩下的就是今天的巨人之路了。
