一、They would have continued to struggle against economic odds and would have lived in obscurity.

1. would have done:這是典型的虛擬語氣句型,主句用would/could/should/might/+have+ done, 從句中過去完成時,表示與過去的事實相反,比如,If I had finished my homework, I would have passed that test.

They secured a victory in the face of overwhelming odds.

The nurse would have been able to stay at home and take care of her baby, but in the face of the pandemic, she battled against the odds to work on the front line and saved many lives.

二、However, there is an even more insidious kind of pollution that particularly affects urban areas and invades our daily lives, and that is noise.

1. Insidious: “潛伏的;隱襲的;隱伏的”,比如:the insidious effects of polluted water supplies 供水系統(tǒng)污染的潛在惡果。

The cancer cells may invade other parts of the body.

In democratic countries any efforts to restrict the freedom of the press are rightly condemned.

【解析】any XX to...is/are rightly condemned:rightly這一副詞的意思是“合情合理地,理所當然的”,比如:They have been treated badly, and they are rightly upset. any XX to...is/are rightly condemned,該句式用is或者are取決于XX的單復數(shù)情況。

In this day and age any attempts to abuse animals are rightly condemned.

四、Hardly anyone can positively enjoy sitting in a train for more than a few hours.

Hardly anyone can do something: hardly經(jīng)常放在ever, any, anyone, anything這些詞的前面用來表達“幾乎不”的意思,hardly anyone can do something相當于almost no one can do something,比如:Hardly anyone (=almost no one) writes to me these days.

1. to recognize that:這一部分做the first (people) 的后置定語,表示“第一個做… He is the first one to win the grand slam.

2. like civil servants…

3. in the belief that:“相信,認為”,比如,She acted in the belief that she was doing good.
