一、Next came a horse, swimming bravely, but we were afraid that the strength of current would prevent its landing anywhere before it became exhausted.

接著是一批活馬勇敢地與水搏擊。但我們擔心，水流的力量將使它上岸之前就筋疲力盡。

【解析】

1. Next came a horse：倒裝句，正常語序是：A horse came next。倒裝使句子表達更加生動和同前文更加緊湊。

2. swimming bravely：現(xiàn)在分詞短語作定語，修飾horse. 

3. Exhausted: “筋疲力盡的；疲憊不堪的”，比如，The exhausted climbers were rescued by helicopter. 筋疲力盡的登山者由直升機營救出來。

作業(yè)一、參賽者自信地大踏步走進足球場。盡管昨天的訓練已經(jīng)讓他們精疲力盡了，但我們在他們臉上看不出一絲疲倦。

Here come the participants, striding confidently into the football pitch, and we can hardly see a trace of tiredness on their faces, although they must be exhausted after yesterday’straining.

二、So great is our passion for doing things for ourselves, that we are becoming increasingly less dependent on specialized labour.

【解析】

1. 這句的基本句型是so...that..., 引導的結(jié)果狀語從句，為了強調(diào)great這個詞，把so great 提到句首，因此主謂語要倒裝，正常語序為：Our passion for doing things for ourselves is so great that…比如，So unreasonable was his price that everybody startled. 他的要價太離譜,令每個人都瞠目結(jié)舌。

2. Be/become dependent on: “依賴于”，比如，They will be dependent on their families or the government for financial support. 當然家人和政府會救濟他們。

So terrible has the bears' natural habitat become under the influence of human beings, that many of them cannot find enough food and have to become dependent on us.

三、Only in a sparsely-populated rural community is it possible to disregard it.只有在人口稀少的農(nóng)村，才可以忽視守時的習慣。

【解析】

1. Only置于句首，后面語序倒裝，正常的語序是：It is possible to disregard it in a sparsely- populated rural community.

2. Sparse：“稀少的；稀疏的；零落的”，比如，Vegetation becomes sparse higher up the mountains. 山上越高的地方植物越稀少。

作業(yè)三、只有多種樹，我們才能保護那些曾經(jīng)樹木稀少的地方不被繼續(xù)沙化。

Only by planting more trees can we protect the once sparsely-wooded areas from further desertification.

四、Only the earth provided ideal conditions, and even here it has taken more than four billion years for plant and animal life to evolve.

It is not surprising to find that it takes no more than five years for this start-up to evolve into a multi-million dollar organization, considering how capable the founder is.

五、Bagrit dismissed the idea that computers would learn to “think” for themselves and would “rule the world”, which people liked to believe in those days.

巴格瑞特根本不接受計算機可以學會自己去“思考”和計算機可以“統(tǒng)治世界”這種想法，而這種想法是當時的人們都愿意相信的。

【解析】

1. The idea that…這里that引導同位語從句，說明 idea 的具體內(nèi)容：computers would learn to 'think' for themselves and would 'rule the world'. think for themselves 指的是“他們自己會思考”。which 引導的定語從句，繼續(xù)修飾 idea： people liked to believe that idea in those days.

2. Dismiss: “不予考慮；摒棄；對…不屑一提”，正式用詞，語氣較輕，比如，The suggestion should not be dismissed out of hand (= without thinking about it). 這個建議不應當直接就被摒棄。

作業(yè)五、認為女生在理科方面比男生差的觀點應該被擯棄了，因為這不僅代表一種充滿偏見的思想，還會阻止那些對科學有興趣的女生進入這一領域。

The idea that female students are inferior to their male counterparts in terms of science subjects should be dismissed, for this not only represents stereotypical thinking, but also discourages girls who have an interest in science from entering the field.
