Please Take Care 
  
I recently signed 346 high school diplomas for our 2013-14 graduates. As I signed I thought about each graduate and what she or he has likely learned during their time at Shanghai American School. 
  
Each student is unique. Each will draw from the excellence of their learning at Shanghai American School as each charts his or her own course in life. And no matter where they go they will be part of a community—or more likely, multiple communities. 
  
What is required to create a genuine sense of community? What are your obligations to that community? How do you keep it healthy and strong? How will you create trusting relationships? How will you apply your talents? This issue of The Eagle Review will give you much to think about in answering those questions. 
  
At my high school alma mater in New England, in addition to a rigorous academic program, we all participated in the daily work of the community. Some of us worked in the laundry; some prepared and served the meals; some cleaned, and some were student librarians. I was a laundry worker one year and a librarian the next. Learning how to iron shirts and appreciate good books came from those jobs. 
  
Today my alma mater still requires participation in the program several hours a week as an integral part of the overall educational experience. Valuable lessons are learned. Each person contributes in their own way. 
  
In 1940, George, a prominent graduate of my alma mater, was sent by his Shanghai family to the school. For the first time in his life he engaged in practical contributions to his community. George told me years later it was the best thing that ever happened to him. He changed from a childhood in which someone else did everything for him to learning to take care of himself and the community in which he lived. Those lessons, he believed, were key to his successful business career and personal life. 
  
What will I tell our graduates as they leave the school? I certainly won't give them any more advice on how to live their lives. They've heard more than enough for now! Instead, I will make a three-word request: 
  
Please take care. 
  
Take care of others who are less fortunate or need a helping hand or kind word. 
  
Take care of the earth and all its creatures and inhabitants. 
  
Take care of yourself in this fast-paced, anxious, tempting, demanding world. You may well live 120 years, on into the 22nd century. Work hard, but also be gentle with yourself every day and save some energy for later years! 
  
As we near the end of another year of educating 3,300 young people at Shanghai American School, Claire and I wish each and every one of you all the best. It has been a privilege helping to educate our young people. If you are leaving us, I hope our paths will cross again. For those who are returning, I wish you a wonderful summer and hope you will find time to read a good book or two or three.

最近給2013-14年346名畢業(yè)生的畢業(yè)證簽名，簽的時候就在想，每一位學(xué)生在上海美國學(xué)校學(xué)到了什么。 
  
每一位學(xué)生都與眾不同。每個上海美國學(xué)校的學(xué)生在學(xué)業(yè)上追求卓越的同時，也給他們的人生道路指明了方向。無論未來身處何處，他們都會是某個社區(qū)的成員，更有可能是多個社會團(tuán)體的一員。 
  
創(chuàng)建一個真正的社區(qū)具備哪些要素？你對這個社區(qū)的責(zé)任是什么？如何讓它變得健康和強(qiáng)大？如何建立成員間的互信關(guān)系？如何施展才干？本期的The Eagle Review會針對上述問題，引人深思，給出解答。 
  
我高中母校在新英格蘭，除了參與學(xué)校嚴(yán)格的課程學(xué)習(xí)外，我們每天都會參與學(xué)校的社區(qū)活動。有的同學(xué)在洗衣房工作，有的準(zhǔn)備飯菜、打掃，還有學(xué)生當(dāng)圖書管理員。當(dāng)時我在洗衣房工作了一年，之后又做了一年圖書管理員。在工作中，我學(xué)會了熨衣服，也懂得了珍惜好書的重要性。 
  
如今，母校依然要求學(xué)生每周參與幾小時的社區(qū)工作，充實(shí)他們的教育經(jīng)歷。學(xué)生受益匪淺。每一個人都在以自己的方式為社區(qū)做貢獻(xiàn)。 
  
1940年，校友喬治離開上海來母校就讀，之后成了學(xué)校的優(yōu)等畢業(yè)生。到那后，他參加了人生第一次的社會實(shí)踐，為自己的社區(qū)出了一份力。多年后喬治告訴我，這是發(fā)生在他身上最棒的事情。從兒時別人為他著想，到如今學(xué)會照顧自己，關(guān)懷自己居住的社區(qū)，他的人生經(jīng)歷了蛻變。他相信，這些經(jīng)歷是事業(yè)和人生成功的關(guān)鍵。 
  
學(xué)生畢業(yè)，我會告誡他們什么呢？我當(dāng)然不會規(guī)勸他們?nèi)绾芜^好自己的人生。他們現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)聽得夠多了！相反，我會對他們提出三個字的要求： 
  
請珍重。 
  
珍重那些不如你幸運(yùn)的人，向需要幫助的人伸出援手，致以慰問。 
  
珍重地球，以及這個星球上所有的生物和居民。 
  
珍重自己，在這個快節(jié)奏、充滿焦慮、誘惑和嚴(yán)苛的世界，照顧好自己。你們很有可能活120年，活到22世紀(jì)。努力工作，但要對自己溫柔點(diǎn)，將來蓄勢待發(fā)！ 
  
又一年，上海美國學(xué)校3300多名青年的學(xué)期接近尾聲，我和克萊爾向大家致以問候和祝福。幫助和教育青年，我們?nèi)f分榮幸。如果你們選擇離開，希望未來的道路我們還會有交集。對于下一學(xué)年返校的各位，我祝愿大家暑期愉快，希望你們能在此期間讀幾本好書。
