一、The noise had been so faint that no one thought that the ship had been damaged.由于聲音非常輕，沒人會(huì)想到船身已遭損壞。

【解析】

1. So…that: “如此…以至于”，這個(gè)表達(dá)大家應(yīng)該也是信手拈來了，這里that也可以省略，比如，She spoke so quietly (that) I could hardly hear her. 她說話輕得我?guī)缀趼牪灰姟aint: 這里是作形容詞，表示（光、聲、味）微弱的，不清楚的，比如，His breathing became faint. 他的呼吸變得微弱了。

作業(yè)一、很多年輕人太沉迷于外國文化，以至于他們對(duì)傳統(tǒng)文化漠不關(guān)心。因此，我們的當(dāng)務(wù)之急是讓他們意識(shí)到我們文化的價(jià)值。

【解析】

1. Not only…but also：“不但…而且”，這個(gè)表達(dá)大家應(yīng)該是信手拈來了，但是寫作中如果想要出彩，大家就需要另辟蹊徑了。這里我們可以把not only 移到句首起強(qiáng)調(diào)作用，后面接助動(dòng)詞+主語；如果沒有其他助動(dòng)詞則用do，此時(shí)but可以省略。比如，Not only do they need clothing, (but) they are also short of water. 他們不但需要衣服，而且還缺水。

2. Be regarded as: “被認(rèn)為…，被視為”，這個(gè)表達(dá)大家應(yīng)該不陌生，舉個(gè)例子：She is regarded as a walking dictionary. 大家認(rèn)為她簡直就是一本活字典。

作業(yè)二、我們不但要花時(shí)間陪伴孩子，還要照顧好年邁的父母，只有這樣我們才能被稱為有責(zé)任心的成年人。

Not only do we need to spend quality time with our children, we should also take good care of our elderly parents. Only in this way can we be regarded as responsible adults.

2. Spot: “看到，注意到，發(fā)現(xiàn)”，這里是作動(dòng)詞，后面可以接sb. /sth. 或者sb. /sth. doing sth. 比如，Neighbours spotted smoke coming out of the house.鄰居們發(fā)現(xiàn)有煙從這所房子里冒出來。另外，單詞后面還可以接特殊疑問詞what, where, etc.比如，I soon spotted what the mistake was. 我很快就看出錯(cuò)誤所在了。

For five of …h(huán)ad been flooded: 這里是由for引導(dǎo)的原因狀語從句。for引導(dǎo)的原因狀語從句并不說明主句行為發(fā)生的直接原因，只提供一些輔助性的補(bǔ)充說明，并且該原因狀語從句只能放于主句之后并且必須用逗號(hào)將其與主句隔開。比如，He could not have seen me, for I was not there. 他不可能見過我， 因?yàn)槲也辉谀抢铩?. 2. Fascinate：“深深吸引；迷住”，這個(gè)詞常常含有使人無法拒絕、無法擺脫的意味。可以作及物動(dòng)詞，后面直接接賓語，fascinate sb. /sth.比如，我被這里的景色迷住了：The view here fascinates me.3. Popular belief: “流行觀念，普遍信仰”，這個(gè)表達(dá)在寫作中也很常用，比如，There is a popular belief among the older generation that filial piety means to obey our parents. 老一輩普遍認(rèn)為孝順就是要聽父母的話。

One of the things that impresses me most about this female scientist is that she is not tied to the popular belief that women should take care of their family; instead, she is fascinated by the boundless universe and devotes all her life to exploring it.
