Percy Jackson and Greek myths
Every boy has a superhero dream. Most superheroes they respect are Iron-man, Thor, Captain America and so on, they are all from Marvel movies. My favorite hero is Spiderman, but today, I’m going to talk about a teenager with ADHD, his name is Percy Jackson.
The “Percy Jackson” book series have two seasons, the first one is about how Camp Half-Blood and the Olympian gods defeated their enemy Kronos. Percy is a six grader with ADHD. He was taken to Camp Half-Blood by his friend, Grover, and he found out that he was the son of Poseidon, the sea god. There was a prophecy, a child of the Big Three (Zeus, Poseidon and Hades), would make a decision that either saves or destroys Olympus, and Percy is “the one”. On his sixteenth birthday, he made the right decision and saved Olympus! The second season is about how Greek and Roman demigods combined forces and defeated Gaia, the earth mother. I like Percy best in these books, he is willing to do anything for his friends, he also tells jokes when his friends are sad and need comfort. What a good friend!
These books contains both Greek mythology and the life of modern teens, the author used Percy Jackson to capture our minds and tell us the relationships between Greek gods. These books also let us know that gods are not perfect, they do stupid things just like ordinary people. My mom helped me to plan a trip to Athens for our summer vacation, I was very excited. When I stood in front of the Parthenon, I imagined Athena and Poseidon fighting for this land thousands of years ago, I could still feel their raft. When I was swimming in the Aegean Sea, I can sense Percy looking at me through the blue water. During this trip, I began to focus on not only Greek stories and mythologies, but also the western civilization.
I want to talk about two points of how Greek mythology effected the western civilization. The first is about astronomy and science, the second is about art and literature. Here are some examples in astronomy and science. I found out the planets in our solar system are named after the Roman Gods, Mercury (Greek name is Hermes) as the messenger god; Venus (Greek name is Aphrodite) as the goddess of love and beauty; Mars (Greek name is Ares) as the God of War, Jupiter (Greek name is Zeus) as the king of the universe and the god of the sky; Saturn (Greek name is Kronos) is Jupiter's father; Uranus (Greek name is the same as Roman name) is the sky and Neptune (Greek name is Poseidon) as the god of the sea. Some of our space probes and moons are named after them too, like Juno (Greek name is Hera) is a space probe to explore Jupiter. She actually was the wife of Jupiter and the goddess of family and marriage. Mars has two moons which are named Phobos and Deimos as they are the sons of Ares. When watching science fiction movies, I can find many interesting points connected to Greek mythology. For example, the Helios Project in the movie The Wandering Earth, Helios actually is the first sun god.
Reading Greek mythology stories, opened a new gate for me to experience the interesting but mysterious connections between Greek myths and ordinary human world. So, I recommend the “Percy Jackson” series to everyone, hope you like it.
